Heavy Equipment Mechanic

As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, earth-moving equipment, and related construction equipment — including road graders, gasoline and diesel-powered tractors, compactors and dozers. Types of daily tasks includes:

• Repairing broken fuel, oil and hydraulic lines
• Replacing cutting edge of bulldozers
• Repairing and replacing tracks, roller and idler rollers
• Removing wire, tires or metal from track frame, final drives and undercarriage
• Plus other tasks related to heavy equipment repair and maintenance

Key Position Responsibilities and Accountability

Perform repairs and assigned preventive maintenance services, including inspections, diagnosis and repair of electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment:

• Diagnose Tier 4 heavy equipment engines, hydraulics and all machinery
• Utilize vehicle computer electronic systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs
• Reviews, completes or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports
• Conducts safety checks on vehicles and equipment
• Performs field service work for emergency breakdowns
• Install, replace or adjust filters, belts or similar objects to repair maintain equipment

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade — including the operation and maintenance requirements of heavy-duty construction equipment.

Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work:

• Make fine, highly controlled muscular movement in order to adjust the position of levers required to repair equipment
• Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects in order to repair
• equipment — such as installing fasteners in instrument clusters
• Manipulate tools in areas of limited space

Ability to diagnose defects in heavy duty equipment.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English

Complete form to record or report information in standard format, as specified on the form

Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards

Essential functions

• Read, understand and apply information from charts, graphs and manuals
• Work cooperatively with other Dry Creek Landfill employees
• Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time
• Lift arms above shoulder level to install and remove heavy components
• Bend or stoop repeatedly over time
• Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet)
• Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
• Work outside in hot (100+ degrees) or cold (below 32 degrees) or wet environments
• Climb safely on and off heavy equipment

Position Requirements

• Must be physically capable of operating all Dry Creek Landfill vehicles safely
• Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) and have an acceptable driving record
• Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions

Preferred Experience

• Five years of experience as a skilled heavy equipment mechanic, or completion of a recognized heavy duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship — other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted

Conditions of Employment

Candidates for this position must meet the position requirements, commercial driver’s license requirements, and successfully pass pre-employment examinations, including drug screen, physical and physical capacities evaluation.

Employee Status: Non-Union/Non-Exempt/At Will

Work Schedule: Formal work week is from Sunday through Saturday. Scheduled work is 7 am to 3 pm, five days per week, depending on service demand. Additional work on other days may be required as needed. Work day includes 30 minute unpaid meal period and two paid 15 minute breaks.

Probationary Period: 90 days
