Route Driver

You will be responsible for safely operating collection equipment for the efficient and effective collection of solid waste, delivering those materials to a designated disposal facility. You will also be responsible for completing required administrative paperwork by use of an on-board computer to maintain accurate company records and customer accounts.

Key Position Responsibilities and Accountability

Operate waste collection equipment

  • drives collection equipment picking up waste in various types of containers
  • provides quality uninterrupted waste collection services
  • works with customers to ensure the efficiency of the collection process and the satisfaction of the customer
  • maintains and submits a daily activity/route log
  • provides quality uninterrupted waste collection services
  • completes pre and post trip inspections of the equipment and submits appropriate reports
  • fuels vehicle daily
  • maintains the physical appearance of the equipment, including routine washing
  • performs daily inspections of the vehicle and performs minor maintenance such as monitoring all fluid levels, checking for leaks, checking vehicle lighting, inspecting belts, checking tire pressure and other functions necessary for safe and efficient operation
  • operates a two-way radio to communicate with and receive instructions from a supervisor or dispatches

Assists Leadman with customer improvements through service and equipment upgrades

  • monitors over and under service utilization to assess changing service requirements
  • monitors the condition and repair needs of existing customer roll carts

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge and practical skills to safely, effectively and efficiently operate
    automated collection equipment
  • Possess a valid Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) — either Class A
    or Class B, with a clean driving record
  • Meet insurance company standards for “good driving record
  • Computer and technology skills that include operating a tablet and a smart
    phone, using Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn challenging technologies used in the solid waste industry
  • Reading, writing, map reading and verbal skills — in English — required to
    follow route instructions, respond to written and oral instructions, provide
    written documentation and exchange information
  • Attention to detail to ensure records and reports accuracy
  • Verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a predominantly English-speaking public to address customer frustrations and conflicts effectively, and to maintain effective relationships with other employees
  • Math skills to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
  • Ability to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 65 pounds and to work with
    others and/or with mechanical tools to lift heavier objects
  • Work at a continual and steady pace in a safe and efficient manner while
    operating vehicle in traffic
  • Mobility to occasionally climb in and out of vehicle, bend and lift objects, and
    walk and push/pull trash-filled roll carts on all types of surfaces
  • Pass randomly timed drug and alcohol tests in accord with DOT and company standards
  • Knowledge, skill and use of ergonomically safe operational practices
  • Knowledge, skill and use of hazardous material identification and handling
    practices
  • Knowledge, skill and use of protective practices for blood-borne pathogens
  • Knowledge, skill and use of fire extinguishers and other emergency practices
  • Punctual and reliable in work attendance and job performance
  • Ability to work independent of direct supervision and to respond with flexibility to potentially changing routes and service demands
  • Follows a scheduled or authorized modified route as required

Conditions of Employment

Candidates for this position must meet the above requirements and successfully pass post-offer employment examinations, including a DOT physical, a drug screen, and physical capacity exam.

Location: 8001 Table Rock Road in White City and Rogue Disposal & Recycling facilities en route

Employee Status: Union/Non Exempt

Work Schedule: Formal workweek is from Sunday through Saturday. Scheduled work is 6:00am to 4:30pm OR 6:30 am to 3 pm five days per week, or 6:30 am to 5 pm four days per week, depending on the route. Additional work on other days may be required as needed. Workday includes 30 minutes unpaid meal period and two paid 10-minute breaks.

Probationary Period: 720 hours worked
